1. The Ultimate Viral Video – It started back in 2000 when two brothers, Van and Casey Neistat, purchased an iMac DV, the first home computer that allowed video editing. They began creating what today we call viral videos. Before YouTube introduced us to David and Charlie, Van and Casey were hard at work producing gems like “iPod’s Dirty Secret.” To this day they literally use the same cameras most of us carry in our pockets, resulting in content that feels extremely accessible.
2. Game Changers Meet Gatekeepers – After more than 200 short films and modest media coverage, the Neistat Brothers found a home for their unique brand of entertainment on HBO. This is not the type of content a traditional media outlet would normally produce but that only enhances the appeal.
3. Redefining Television – Many will call this a reality show, but the Neistat Brothers call it “a handmade home-movie TV show.” The major distinction? No third-party production team comes between the viewer and the subject. The two brothers shoot and edit every aspect of the show themselves. While there are no overt references to additional online content, they capture new footage every day and regularly post videos like this one about Chatroulette.
4. The Creative Economy at its Finest – Van and Casey prove that if you follow your passion, find a niche and work extremely hard you can create your own opportunities. Can you imagine how many people told them to get a “real job?” Lucky for us they didn’t. Their work embodies everything John Howkins, Gary V, Steve Garfield, Seth Godin, Daniel Pink and others have been preaching.
5. Money Green Leather Sofa – The Neistat Brothers embrace pop culture through their own lens. It’s often subtle, but always savvy. The sofa in their studio is named after a Notorious BIG song. Need I say more?
If you have HBO, the first three episodes are on demand. If you don’t, find a friend who does and get ready for something completely unique, authentic and inspiring.
